INTRODUCTION

Jumping between a number of different image-based music markets makes sustaining any single look like a rather difficult task, but Sophie has managed to achieve consistency in that, regardless of the style, she always looks good. From the mod gear of her indie days to the backless shirts and slinky skirts of present, Sophie wears her clothes amazingly well, and always seems ready for the catwalk.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is not only known as a talented musician. Her sense for fashion and style has drawn lots of attention as well. But how does she do to always look that good? According to her, "style is the key word". Sophie has often mentioned that she doesn't follow fashion like many other artists do, she just likes to have fun with.

She also knows her limitations. Sophie thinks that she doesn't look good in those low-riding trousers or fashionable things and that's why she usually goes for classic stuff as she doesn't have to think much about it. As a popstar, she doesn't think that being handsome or ugly matters. What really matters is your own irradiation, the way you are and if you know what looks good on your figure. However, she does think carefully about she'll wear when she's out on the streets, as she believes that fans are not only interested in her music, but also in her as a person.

If she could describe her style, she'd say that she's colourful, consistent, eclectic and vintage-inspired, if not actually vintage. However, she says that her style hasn’t changed much through the years, she still buys the same kind of dresses and skirts. Sophie also loves the 50s: “I loved that classy look from the fifties: colourful dresses, off the shoulders tops and wide petticoats. I still love it”.

Unlike of what you might think, Sophie usually doesn’t buy her clothes at expensive stores. She’s known for biding on eBay and she’s got many nice dresses from there. According to her, second-hand stuff leaves you open to whatever your personal style is rather than feeling dictated to by shops.

"There's nothing special about a pretty popstar. You have to exploit the larger-than-life element - you can almost be a cartoon character". In other words, a very girlie girl in polka-dot dress and red lipstick, who is rediscovering fashion after a phase of jeans and nappies: "I think I didn’t wear heels for a year! I feel much more grown up now - I love real women like Kylie or Debbie Harry, who sing pop songs, but loaded. I'm pretty comfortable with my body, but I don't see myself wearing sequinned hot-pants any where outside the bedroom in everyday life”.

Among her favourite brands is Chanel, though she doesn’t buy it very often, only when she’s got money left. Another favourite is Dolce & Gabbana because they show your female shapes. What about her favourite outfit? “A little black dress that I bought in a second-hand shop in Los Angeles. The dress is shaped and simple. It cost only 30 dollars”.

Sophie is really a style icon, but who is hers? She often mentions Julie Andrews, but she also says it can be anyone who are not necessarily beautiful, but those who take whatever it is that makes them unique and push it to extremes, such as Marylin Manson, Nick Cave or even PJ Harvey.

Does Sophie ever wear jeans? She certainly does. However, you won’t ever find her in jeans on stage. It’s important to her to look good when performing and she loves being feminine and performing in skirts and dresses. She does wear jeans when she’s rehearsing, though and you can also check in this section some pictures of her wearing jeans.

Finally, how does Sophie manage to keep this great shape? If you think she goes on a diet, you’re completely wrong. “I don’t do diets as I believe they’re bad for your body and mind. I just try to make healthy choices instead”. Anything else we should know? She doesn’t go to gym either… she prefers to keep trim with enjoyable activities like walking up and down the streets doing some shopping or going to a disco and dancing all night because that’s much more fun!

Sophie’s beauty tips

1) Think of yourself as beautiful. If you feel insecure, you can’t look stylish. I always get the best reactions when I’m happy. Sometimes, I go out and feel great and sometimes, I see a picture of me and I look really awful.

2) Use a little bit of blusher. A quick pep up if you look a bit pale, like me. Blush can make miracles when you have no make-up on at all.

3) Let your body prescribe what you have to wear, not what’s latest on fashion. There are certain things that will never suit me, which is a pity, but there are enough clothes which suit me great.

5) Drink lots of water and remove all your make-up before sleeping.

6) Finally, style stays longer than fashion!
